This is an Agency initiative. ITCD provides this Web page as a courtesy to HQ users.
NASA is moving towards a simplified login system. When this is fully implemented, users will not have to login separately to any of applications they use. The idea behind simplified login is to centralize information about which applications an individual has permission to access, and then standardize the login process so that (eventually) users need only login once to obtain access to all their applications.
First, applications are modified to recognize a user’s Launchpad credentials. Next, applications are modified to automatically recognize that a user has already provided credentials when they started up their computer (“simplified login”). You can see which applications currently allow simplified login in the right-hand column of this table: Launchpad-enabled applications.
Just as your e-mail no longer requires a separate login, over time you will find more and more applications simply open when you request them.
- Simplified login is designed to work regardless of how you login to your computer. You may login using your smartcard + PIN or, alternatively, using your Agency User ID + domain password.
- Once an application has been modified to accept simplified login, users have direct access whether they are plugged in at HQ, on the Wireless Network for HQ Users, or using the Virtual Private Network.
- The use of Internet Explorer or Safari is recommended at this time.
Migration Process
Agency applications are leading the way in the use of Launch Pad. All Web-based applications at HQ will follow, with lesser-used applications migrating last. (The current target date for all HQ Web-based applications to become Launch Pad integrated is September, 2011.) There is no schedule for client / server applications at this time. There is no plan at this point to integrate the password used when starting up your computer (i.e., the password used to access the NDC domain) with Launch Pad.
Current Limitations
This initiative is in progress, and not yet completed. Therefore, a few limitations currently exist:
- When away from HQ, you must use Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access applications that utilize simplified login. Secure Nomadic Access (SNA) is not compatible with simplified login at this time, and will not present you with the option to login manually.
- Use Internet Explorer or Safari as your Internet browser if possible. Other supported browsers may require configuration settings that are not yet fully implemented.
- Offsite contractors using non-NASA issued computers, even when connected via Virtual Private Network, will have to login to applications with their Agency User ID and Launchpad password.
