Office 2007 Service Pack 2 Deployment
NASA HQ Windows Users
August 6, 2009
Office 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) is being deployed to all Windows computers at HQ. This will improve the stability, performance, and security of Microsoft Office 2007.
Installation Options
You have two options for installing Office 2007 SP2:
- Download and install, at your convenience, via the Software Refresh Portal (SRP)
- Receive automated push via the Systems Management Server (SMS), which can be installed immediately or later
If you do not use the SRP deployment method by Friday, August 14, SP2 will be deployed to your computer via an SMS push between Monday, August 17 and Friday, August 21. Do not be alarmed if you used SRP and also receive the push. Reinstallation will only take place if needed.

What To Expect During the Upgrade Process
It takes 8-10 minutes to install SP2 on most computers. A restart of your computer is required.
After the upgrade has been downloaded to your computer, the first time you open the Outlook e-mail application found in Office 2007, you may see the message “Preparing Outlook for first use.” This is expected and occurs because the upgrade requires the re-indexing of e-mail files. This re-indexing process averages 10-20 minutes on most computers, but may take up to an hour under certain conditions, including large mailboxes and .pst files.
Software Refresh Portal (SRP) Installation
Beginning immediately, you may visit the SRP at http://hqsms2k3\srp to install Office 2007 SP2. Prior to installation, save your work and close all applications. You will have until close of business Friday, August 14 to use the SRP deployment method:
- Visit the SRP site at http://hqsms2k3\srp.
- Click on the Applications button on the left.
- Read the instructions below the “Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2007” link on the right prior to starting the installation.
- Click on “Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2007” to start the installation.
- Once the installation is complete, you will be prompted to restart your computer.
SMS Push Installation
If you have not used the SRP deployment method by Friday, August 14, SP2 will be deployed to your computer via an SMS push between Monday, August 17 and Friday, August 21.
When SP2 is deployed to your computer, you may notice a balloon message notifying you that an update to your computer is available. You have the following options:
- You may click on the balloon to install the update immediately, and you will be prompted to restart your computer when installation is complete.
- If you ignore the balloon message and continue working, SP2 will automatically be installed after 7 p.m. on Monday, August 24, and your computer will be restarted. Ensure all documents are closed at the end of the day, as unsaved work may be lost.
- If your computer is unavailable on Monday, August 24, SP2 will be installed immediately the next time your computer is connected to the HQ network.
Please remember, DO NOT power off your computer while Office 2007 SP2 is being installed, or while the message "Preparing Outlook for first use" is displayed.
