NAMS Roles and Training Options – Supervisors and Application Approvers
HQ Supervisors and NAMS Application Approvers
January 23, 2008
You have been identified as a Supervisor and/or an Application Approver of a Headquarters IT system or application. This IT Notice is to call your attention again to the availability and importance of attending NASA Account Management System (NAMS) training specifically for supervisors and others who are required to use NAMS to review and approve account access requests. In December 2007, NAMS was implemented at NASA Headquarters. NAMS is the Agency’s centralized system for requesting and maintaining accounts for NASA IT systems and applications.
NAMS Training Options
Classroom training is strongly recommended for all Supervisors (called Sponsors in NAMS) and Application Approvers. In this training, you will learn what your roles and responsibilities are for NAMS and account management. If you missed the classes in December, please take advantage of the second and final round of training that begins January 29 and continues through the end of February. Pre-registration is required. Please review the training schedule and contact the Computer Training Center at (202) 358-1111 to reserve your space. Those attending classroom training will obtain a NAMS account during the training session. In addition, online training is now available in SATERN. You will find instructions for accessing online NAMS training on the NAMS@HQ Web page.
The Roles of Supervisor and Application Approver
Supervisors and Application Approvers have unique responsibilities in the review and approval of account requests. The NAMS process requires that an employee’s request for access to an application be reviewed by his or her supervisor. In NAMS, the supervisor is referred to as the “Sponsor.” As a Sponsor/Supervisor, it is your responsibility to validate the business need for your employee. After validating the business need, the request is forwarded to the Application Approver for final approval.
Handling Your First Account Access Request
Requests for account access arrive in the form of an e-mail message from “IdMAX.” IdMAX is the Identity Management System that serves as a gatekeeper to the NAMS application. In order to respond to a request, you will need a NAMS account. Anyone with access to i-View can log into NAMS using his or her i-View username and password. All other users may establish access to NAMS by following the “instructions for obtaining an account” online.
If you receive a request for account access prior to attending classroom training, please reference the detailed instructions for processing such a request from the NAMS FAQ’s document. If you plan to attend a training quite soon, you may also print the IdMAX message and bring it with you to training for one-on-one assistance.
Visit the NAMS@HQ Web page to learn more about NAMS at Headquarters. For questions about Agency direction concerning account access management, contact Joan Verbeck at (202) 358-1477.
Should you need assistance using NAMS, please contact the Enterprise Service Desk (ESD) at 358-HELP (4357), 1-866-4NASAHQ (462-7247), mailto:nasa-esd@mail.nasa.gov, or https://esd.nssc.nasa.gov
