Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Process

PIV is the Agency tool used to validate an identity for access to facilities and information technology systems and applications.  This tool is used to enable the process of issuing a trusted identity badge that is recognized as valid within and outside the agency from which it was issued.

PIV is accessed through the Identity and Access Management System (IdMAX). To access PIV, you must have an IdMAX account (see instructions for obtaining an IdMAX account).

PIV is used for gaining both physical access to a facility as well as logical access to a NASA IT system or application.  There are three common badges to access NASA facilities.  The common badges are:

  • Permanent Badge (PIV compliant) - for NASA employees and contractors who will need access to NASA facilities and information technology systems for 180 days or more
  • Temporary - for NASA employees and contractors who will need access to NASA facilities for less than 180 days
  • Visitor - issued for 5 days or less

Workers who do not have a need to come on-site are considered Remote Users and must following the Remote User sub process.

Remote User Identity Service

The Remote User tool a sub process of the PIV process. This tool is used to request a badge and IT access for a worker who does not require physical access to a NASA facility and who resides more than 50 miles away.

Training for Those Who Initiate or Approve Requests for IT Access

In order to be able to initiate or approve requests for badges and IT access, you must complete online training in SATERN. There are distinct courses for those who fulfill the role of PIV Requesters (those who initiate a badge or an IT access request) and PIV Sponsors (those who are asked to vouch for another’s official relationship with NASA). For more information about these roles and mandatory training, please contact the HQ Security Office at 358-2371.

To Obtain an IdMAX account

You must have an IdMAX account to use the tools within the IdMAX system. To activate your IdMAX account, visit idmax.nasa.gov and click on “First Time User.”
