Agency User ID (AUID) Renaming Project at HQ

NASA is currently building a comprehensive Authentication and Authorization (A&A) infrastructure that will use a combination of user ID’s and passwords, smart cards, and other credentials to achieve significant user benefits. One of the AA initiatives is the development of a NASA Consolidated Active Directory (NCAD) with unique Agency User ID’s (AUID).

NCAD is an Agency-wide project to consolidate individual directories at each Center into one Agency directory. The implementation of an AUID is the first step toward a simplified sign-on environment, improved mobility (i.e., while visiting another Center), and one milestone to Smart Card enablement.

The NASA HQ Active Directory will be migrated into the new NCAD beginning in November 2008. To prepare for this migration, approximately 800 Headquarters employees have been identified to receive a new Agency user ID (login name) during the HQ AUID Renaming Project. This new user ID will match the agency-assigned AUID and become the computer login name and provide access to e-mail and other applications.

For many employees, the new AUID is the same as their current HQ User ID. For those employees whose User ID (username) may be identical to others across the Agency, it is necessary to change the User ID to a unique ID.

Until several other Agency-wide projects are complete, it will be necessary to use the new AUID to access only certain systems. See the AUID System Access List Web page to learn when to use the new AUID. There is no change to the login process for other applications and services.
